Choosing a bridle (colloquially called a snaffle bridle) is just as important as fitting the saddle or regular visits from the farrier. Poorly chosen equipment can cause pain, stiffness in the poll and make the effects of training the opposite of what was intended.
To consciously choose the best model for your mount, you first have to understand what a bridle consists of and what function each of its straps performs. In this article we break the bridle down into its basic factors.
How does a bridle work?
A bridle is more than a set of straps holding the bit. It is a precise communication system. Working in harmony with the reins, the seat and the leg, it transmits signals from the rider to the horse’s mouth and poll.
It is worth remembering that even the best-trained horse needs clear signals. The bridle stabilises the bit in the mouth, prevents it from moving and allows for subtle action of the hand.

The construction elements of a bridle – the anatomy of equipment
Although many types of bridles are available on the market (from classic English ones to bitless), most of them consist of the same, key elements.
1. The crownpiece (Headpiece) – the heart of the bridle
This is the most important structural part, lying on the horse’s poll (behind the ears). It is here that all the forces acting on the bridle converge.

Function: It holds the whole bridle on the head and forms the base for attaching the cheekpieces and the noseband.

Important: In modern Balotade bridles we use anatomical headpieces. They are wider and specially cut out at the ears, so as not to press on the sensitive nerves and muscle attachments. An ordinary, narrow crownpiece can cause pain and stiffening of the neck.
2. The browband – stabilisation and style
A strap running across the forehead, below the ears.

Function: It prevents the headpiece from sliding back onto the neck.

Style: This is the most decorative element of the bridle. At Balotade you will find straight browbands, drop-shaped ones, set with crystals or pearls. Remember, however, that the browband must not be too short – it cannot pull the headpiece onto the ears!
3. The cheekpieces – adjusting the bit
They run on both sides of the head, connecting the headpiece with the bit.

Function: They hold the bit at the appropriate height in the mouth.

Adjustment: It is thanks to them that you decide whether the bit lies higher (causing a “smile” in the horse) or lower. It is important that they are fastened symmetrically on both sides.
4. The throatlatch – the safety catch
A strap fastened under the horse’s jaw (throat).

Function: It prevents the bridle from sliding off over the ears in case of a sudden movement of the head or a fall.

Fit: It does not take part in steering the horse! It should be fastened loosely – so that a vertically placed fist fits between the strap and the neck. A too-tight throatlatch can choke the horse during strong flexion at the poll.
5. The noseband – jaw stabilisation
A strap encircling the horse’s nose. It comes in many variants (English, Swedish, Hanoverian, Mexican).

Function: It stabilises the lower jaw and the bit, preventing excessive opening of the mouth and “escaping” from contact.

Myth: The noseband is not for forcibly closing the mouth! Its role is support. In anatomical bridles the noseband straps are often integrated with the headpiece, in order to reduce pressure on the cheekbones.

Additional elements essential for riding
The bridle itself is a frame. For it to work, you still need two elements:

The bit: A metal, rubber or synthetic element inserted into the mouth. It is this that exerts a direct influence on the tongue and the edges of the lower jaw.

The reins: Straps connecting the bit with the rider’s hand. They can be leather, webbing or rubberised. It is through them that you send feedback signals to the horse’s mouth.
