Most of us, when choosing a new browband, follow one rule: “It has to sparkle!”. And there is nothing wrong with that – the browband is jewellery for the horse’s head that adds elegance in the dressage arena. However, beneath the layer of crystals hides an element that performs a key technical function.
A too-tight browband is one of the most common causes of problems with bit acceptance and of headaches in horses. Paradoxically, it is also the element most often ignored by riders. Check whether your horse is suffering because of a poorly chosen size.
1. What is a browband actually for?
The browband does not serve only to make the bridle look nice. Its technical task is to prevent the bridle from sliding backwards, onto the horse’s neck. It works like an anchor that holds the crownpiece upright.
The problem arises when the browband is too short. Then, instead of just stabilising, it begins to act like a lever, pulling the whole bridle forward.
2. The vice effect – what does the horse feel?
When the browband is too short, it inevitably pulls the crownpiece (headpiece) towards the ears, digging it into their rear, very sensitive part.
- Pressure on the ears: The base of the ear is densely innervated. Constant, dull pressure in this place causes pain, which the horse tries to relieve by violently shaking its head (headshaking).
- Blockage of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ): A tight browband presses the bridle against the joints that work while chewing the bit. Pain in this place makes the horse clench its teeth, stiffen the poll and refuse to come onto contact.
Your horse does this? It may be the browband’s fault!
- The horse shakes its head vertically or horizontally without an obvious cause.
- It does not allow you to touch its ears when putting on the bridle (it becomes “naughty” during bridling).
- It tries to rub its head against its foreleg right after training.
- White hairs appear behind the ears (a sign of skin necrosis from pressure).
3. The two-finger test – how to check the fit?
To check whether your current browband is safe, perform a simple test in the stable:
- Put the complete bridle on the horse.
- Slide two fingers under the browband at the very centre of the forehead.
- Try to move your fingers towards the ears.
If the browband lies freely and your fingers fit without any problem along its entire length – it is perfect. If you feel that the skin on the forehead is stretched as if on a drum, and the browband cuts into the forehead when you try to insert a finger – replace it immediately with a larger size.
4. Straight vs Anatomical (Curved)
Classic, straight browbands are often problematic for horses with a wide forehead or a massive base of the ears. That is why at Balotade we focus on anatomical browbands (curved into an arc/U-shape).
- Their shape naturally avoids the sensitive base of the ears.
- They give more “slack” and freedom, even if the browband is heavily decorated.
Summary
The browband is often the cheapest element of the bridle, and replacing it can radically change your horse’s comfort. Do not be afraid to buy an X-Full size for a Full head if your horse has a wide forehead. In this case: looser means healthier.
