Black Steel Bits – Natural salivation and better bit acceptance

Black Steel bits , made of hand-polished so-called "sweet" black steel, are an excellent choice for riders who are looking for solutions that improve bit acceptance and horse comfort. These are modern bits with stimulating properties, created for sensitive mounts, young horses and horses that have difficulty making contact with the rider's hand.

What is black steel and why do we use it?

Black steel (also known as sweet iron) is a material that naturally oxidizes when exposed to moisture, air and the warmth of the horse's mouth . As a result, a delicate coating with a sweet aftertaste appears on the surface of the mouthpiece. It acts as a natural stimulant, encouraging the horse to:

  • greater chewing of the bridle ,

  • saliva secretion ,

  • relaxing the muscles of the mouth and neck .

This makes the horse take the bit better , is calmer in the hand and concentrates more easily while working.

A bit that changes color – a natural process

Black steel bits are initially intensely black, but as they are used they go through successive stages of oxidation – they turn grey, brown and finally become covered with a thin layer of sweet rust . This is a completely natural and desirable process , which proves the activity of the material and its beneficial effect on the horse's salivation.

There is no need to worry about the deposit that appears – it does not indicate wear or technical corrosion , but is a sign of natural oxidation.

What kind of horses are black steel bits recommended for?

Black Steel bits are especially recommended for:

  • young horses that are learning to accept the bit,

  • sensitive mounts that do not tolerate stainless steel or metals with a cold aftertaste,

  • horses that do not chew well or tend to "hold" the bit in their mouth,

  • riders looking for more natural training solutions.

Black Steel Bits in the Balotade range

At Balotade you will find models:

  • single and double broken ,

  • with different mouthpiece shapes (e.g. anatomical, olive),

  • with an aesthetic, modern finish that highlights the style of the bridle.

These are functional bits that combine effectiveness with natural action , increasing the horse's comfort and efficiency of work from the ground and in the saddle.
