In previous articles we discussed the construction of a bridle, but even the most expensive model made of the best leather will not fulfil its role if it sits badly. The anatomy of a horse’s head is complex – hundreds of nerve endings, sensitive bones and delicate blood vessels require precision.
Here are the rules that will help you check whether your horse feels comfortable in its bridle.
1. The browband – freedom for the ears
We start from the top. The browband is not just a decoration. Its main task is to stabilise the crownpiece.
- The rule: The browband should be long enough not to pull the headpiece forward, onto the back of the horse’s ears.
- Checkpoint: Put two fingers under the browband in the middle of the forehead – they should go in freely. If the browband is too short, the crownpiece will press on the sensitive base of the ears, which often manifests as head shaking and problems with the poll.
2. The crownpiece (Headpiece) – the command centre
This is where the greatest pressure accumulates. Modern bridles, like those in the Balotade range, have anatomical cut-outs for the ears.
- The rule: The headpiece should lie flat behind the ears, not pressing on their rear edge.
- Tip: Choose models with a wide, softly padded crownpiece that distributes the weight over a larger area.

3. The throatlatch – breathing under control
The throatlatch is meant to prevent the bridle from slipping off over the ears (e.g. during a fall), but it must not make breathing difficult when the horse is set “on contact”.
- The rule: Between the strap and the horse’s jaw a vertically placed fist should fit.
- Remember: Of two evils, it is better for the throatlatch to hang a little looser than to be fastened too tightly.
4. Cheekpieces and the bit – avoid the “nutcracker”
The length of the cheekpieces decides where the bit ends up in the mouth. It should rest on the bars (the toothless part of the lower jaw).
- The rule: It is generally accepted that two delicate wrinkles should appear in the corners of the mouth.
- Watch the symmetry: Always fasten the cheekpieces on the same hole on both sides. An asymmetrical bit means a crooked mouth and errors in communication.
- The myth of the loose bit: Some people think that a bit fastened very low is gentler. Nothing could be further from the truth! A bit that is too loose bangs against the teeth (the tushes in stallions or the premolars), which causes the horse enormous pain.
5. The noseband – two fingers of freedom
The noseband stabilises the bit and prevents excessive opening of the mouth, but it must not “lace it up”. The horse must have the ability to chew freely and swallow saliva.
- The rule: Between the noseband and the horse’s nasal bone, two fingers must fit freely.
- Location: A cavesson (English) noseband should be about 1.5–2 cm below the processes of the zygomatic bones. Fastening it too high can cause painful pinching of the cheeks against the teeth.
