The bit is the basic link between the rider’s hand and the horse’s mouth. Although at first glance it seems a simple piece of metal, its choice is one of the most important technical decisions. A properly chosen bit allows subtle communication, while a poorly fitted one becomes a source of pain and misunderstanding.

From this article you will learn which key factors to pay attention to so that your bit is safe and comfortable for your horse.

1. The type of bit – where to start?

The first step is choosing the mechanics of action. The market offers hundreds of models, which we can divide into several main groups:

  • Straight and jointed bits: The most popular choices. Double-jointed bits are considered milder, because they adapt better to the shape of the tongue.
  • Anatomical bits: Designed to take into account the limited space in the mouth and to avoid sensitive points.
  • Leverage bits (Pelham, curb bit): Intended for experienced riders, they allow a stronger action using less force.

2. The material matters – steel, copper or sweet iron?

Did you know that the material of the bit affects how willingly the horse accepts it?

  • Stainless steel: Classic, durable and easy to care for. However, it is “cold” and neutral in taste.
  • Sweet iron: This material oxidises under the influence of moisture, which gives the bit a sweetish taste. Horses love this taste, which encourages them to chew and relax the jaw.
  • Copper and copper alloys: They help the horse salivate, which makes it easier to accept the bit.
  • Coloured bits (Rose Gold, Rainbow): At Balotade we combine style with quality. Our coloured bits are safe and hypoallergenic, adding elegance to your bridle.

3. How to choose the bit size? (The golden rule)

This is the most common flashpoint. Too short a bit injures the corners of the mouth, and too long a one – slides sideways, striking the teeth and gums.

How to measure the mouth? The simplest way is to use a clean stick or a piece of string. Put it in the mouth where the bit lies, mark the width and measure with a tape measure.

  • Movable bits (loose rings): Should have about 0.5 cm of slack on the sides so that the rings do not pinch the lips.
  • Fixed bits (egg-butt, Baucher): Should lie fairly close to the corners of the mouth, but without painfully squeezing them.

4. Quality of workmanship – what to look at?

When buying a bit, always check with your finger whether all the joints are smooth. Any sharp edge or production flaw can cause a painful abrasion. By choosing a trusted seller like Balotade, you can be sure that the bit has passed quality control.

It is a waste of time on equipment that injures – it is better to spend that time watching funny cats on YouTube or a longer walk on a loose rein out in the field.

Summary

Choosing a bit is a process. Sometimes the ideal model is only found after several tries. Remember that even the best bit will not replace a gentle and stable rider’s hand. If you have doubts – contact us, we will be happy to advise!
