Pelham Bits – Strong Control and Precision for Experienced Riders
The Pelham bit is a technically advanced bit designed for horses that require increased control and more precise head carriage. Due to its leverage-based construction, the Pelham exerts significantly more influence than traditional snaffle bits and should therefore only be used by experienced riders with a steady, sensitive hand.
At Balotade, we offer double-jointed Pelham bits in various materials and sizes – perfectly suited to your horse's needs and chosen discipline.
How Does a Pelham Bit Work?
The Pelham functions on a leverage principle created by side shanks and a curb chain. Key components include:
- Shanks (leverage arms) – transfer pressure to the poll and lower jaw,
- Curb chain – stabilizes the bit and enhances its action across the horse’s mouth,
- Option to attach one or two sets of reins – allows the rider to adjust intensity with precision.
When using two reins:
- The upper rein acts like a traditional snaffle,
- The lower rein activates the leverage effect, applying pressure to the poll.
This setup allows dynamic adjustment of rein aids, depending on the horse’s response and the demands of training or competition.
Who Should Use a Pelham Bit?
Given its strong action, the Pelham should only be used by riders:
- with a steady, experienced hand,
- familiar with using two reins and managing leverage-based equipment,
- working with strong, difficult horses that toss their head or struggle with consistent contact.
Usage options include:
- A single rein with a converter strap (available at Balotade),
- Two reins – the traditional method for adjusting rein pressure with accuracy.
The Pelham is not suitable for young horses or beginner riders, as improper use can lead to resistance and a breakdown in communication.
Pelham Bits at Balotade
Our collection includes:
- Balotade® Double-Jointed Stainless Steel Pelham – a classic, highly durable model,
- Balotade® Double-Jointed Blue Steel Pelham – made from sweet blue steel, which naturally oxidizes in contact with saliva. This encourages chewing and improves bit acceptance.
Be sure to choose the right curb chain – it should be shaped properly, avoid causing rubbing, and evenly distribute pressure.
This bit offers a high level of control and precision – ideal for advanced riders seeking refined rein aids.
