Straight bits (barbells) – maximum gentleness and stability of action

Straight bits , also known as bar bits , are the simplest type of bit in terms of construction. They do not break at any point, which makes their action constant, gentle and evenly distributed across the entire width of the horse's mouth. Bits of this type are an excellent solution for horses that are sensitive, young or have a tendency to put their tongue over .

How do straight bits work?

Unlike jointed bits, the barbell:

  • it does not bend , so it does not create any point pressure on the tongue or palate,

  • ensures gentle, constant contact across the entire width of the horse's mouth,

  • works very gently , which has a positive effect on the horse's comfort and acceptance of the bit.

Thanks to its stiffness and simple design, this bit lies stably in the mouth and does not change position while riding - which is of great importance for horses learning the basics of contact or prone to excessive play with the bit.

What kind of horses are straight bits recommended for?

Straight bits work perfectly:

  • in young horses starting to work with a bridle,

  • in horses with a very sensitive mouth that do not tolerate point pressure well,

  • in horses that tend to shift their tongue or ignore the reins,

  • in harnesses , where stability and gentle operation are important.

This is one of the most popular solutions as a first bit , which allows the horse to build confidence in the contact and understand the basic signals of the rider.

Does the straight bit have its limitations?

Yes – despite the numerous advantages, it is important to remember that:

  • a straight bit may be too gentle for horses that are more dominant or require more precision,

  • it will not work in situations where a stronger reaction to rein signals is needed.

Therefore, its selection should be adapted to both the temperament of the horse and the riding level of the user and the type of discipline practiced.
