Olive bits – stability, gentleness and safety

Olive bits are one of the most recommended models for sensitive horses and riders with less stable hands. Thanks to their special construction, they provide exceptionally gentle and stable action , reducing the risk of abrasions and increasing comfort in the horse's mouth. In the Balotade offer you will find various variants of olive bits - both single and double-jointed , in classic and designer versions.

Where does the name “olive bit” come from?

The name "olive" comes from the characteristic shape of the mouthpiece ends , which resemble olive seeds . These rounded, oval ends connecting the mouthpiece with the bit rings not only serve an aesthetic function, but above all increase safety and comfort of use . They reduce the risk of pinching the horse's lips and chafing, which can occur with more mobile models with loose rings.

This type of construction has been appreciated for years by sports and recreational riders and trainers who focus on the stability, gentleness and predictability of the bit's action .

What makes olive bits unique?

The main difference between the olive and classic bits is the way the rings are mounted . In the olive models:

  • the wheels do not rotate freely , which prevents excessive movement of the mouthpiece,

  • the connection is stiff and stable , so the bit does not move in the mouth,

  • the design eliminates the risk of pinching the corners of the horse's lips and cheeks - this is one of the main advantages of this model.

Thanks to this, the bit lies securely and quietly , giving the horse a sense of security and predictability - which is of great importance in everyday work and building contact.

Is the olive bit delicate?

Yes. The olive bit is considered one of the most delicate bits available on the market . It works perfectly for:

  • horses sensitive to pressure and abrasions ,

  • mounts with a wide muzzle , where the risk of pinching is greater,

  • young horses or those learning to accept contact,

  • beginner riders or those with a less stable hand.

However, it is important to remember that not all horses will enjoy this feeling of stability – for some it may be too “stiff”, especially if they tend to lean too much on the bit.

What effect do olive bits have?

Unlike classic loose ring models:

  • they do not have moving wheels , so the mouthpiece moves less,

  • the signals from the rider's hand are more direct, but not sharp ,

  • They limit the bit from pulling to one side , which improves balance and precision.

This makes them perfect for working on calmness, relaxation and acceptance of the bridle.
