A young horse’s first steps under saddle are a crucial moment in its education. This is when trust in the rider’s hand and acceptance of the bit are built. The choice of the first bit cannot be left to chance – it must “translate” the signals in a way that is clear, calm and free of pain.

Most trainers and veterinarians point here to one specific type: the egg-butt bit. Why does the “egg-butt” win against classic loose rings?

1. Stability, that is “quiet” in the mouth

A young horse is only just learning to react to pressure. Loose rings, which slide freely through the mouthpiece, can be too “noisy” and unstable for it.

  • The egg-butt bit has rings permanently connected to the mouthpiece (in a hinged way).
  • Thanks to this, the bit lies very calmly in the mouth, does not “float” sideways and does not bounce with every movement of the reins.
  • For the horse this means a clear signal: when the rider guides into contact, the bit is always in the same place.

2. Maximum protection of the corners of the mouth

A young horse’s mouth is extremely sensitive. Classic bits with loose rings carry the risk of “pinching” the delicate skin of the corners of the mouth between the ring and the metal part of the mouthpiece.

The construction of the egg-butt bit completely eliminates this problem. The wide, smooth ends of the mouthpiece (resembling an egg-butt in shape) form a natural barrier and shield. Thanks to this, the horse does not associate the bit with sudden, burning pain, which is crucial for building a positive relationship with the bit.

3. Support when learning turns

Young horses often have trouble understanding lateral aids and “falling out” through the shoulder. The egg-butt bit, thanks to its more stable construction, acts a little like a side limiter.

When one rein acts, the opposite “egg-butt” gently rests against the horse’s cheek, suggesting the direction of the turn. This is a much clearer signal than with loose rings, which may simply slide in the mouth.

4. Building trust in the contact

Horses that feel safe with a stable bit are more willing to “seek the hand” and chew the bit. The egg-butt gives them a feeling of constant support. It is precisely on such a bit that it is easiest to teach a horse to seek forward and down, which is the foundation of the training scale.

📦 Choose a safe Balotade egg-butt bit

For young horses we especially recommend egg-butt models of medium thickness (14-16 mm), which do not take up too much space in the mouth while providing a gentle distribution of pressure.
