The Full Cheek Bit: King of Steering

Fighting the horse over every turn, “falling out” through the shoulder or ignoring turning signals are problems that can take the joy out of riding. Although most riders look for a solution in the strength of the mouthpiece, the real answer often lies in… the cheeks.

1. Physics in the rider’s service: how do the cheeks work?

In a classic bit the signal comes almost exclusively from pressure on the tongue and the bars of the jaw. The full cheek bit adds a third element, extremely clear to the horse: lateral pressure on the cheek.

Mechanism of action: When you act with the left rein to turn left, the full cheek bit does not just slide in the mouth. The right (outer) cheek rests with its entire surface against the horse’s right cheek.
Effect: The horse feels a physical “push” of the head in the desired direction. This is a much clearer signal, harder to ignore than the gentle movement of a ring in an ordinary bit.

2. Stabilisation and safety

The cheeks have one more, crucial function: they stabilise the mouthpiece. Thanks to the long arms, the bit cannot slide sideways or “float” in the mouth.

What is more, the full cheek bit is the safest choice in emergency situations. It is physically impossible to pull it through the horse’s mouth – even if a panicked horse starts to resist strongly and the rider acts with the rein with great force. For this reason it is a model often recommended for children on ponies and for people who ride out in the field.

3. Ideal for a young horse

Contrary to appearances, the full cheek bit is not “sharp”. On the contrary – thanks to the large contact surface on the cheek, the signals are milder and more understandable for the horse. Young horses that are only just learning to respond to the aids grasp the idea of the turn much faster when they have such clear lateral support.

Cheek keepers – are they needed?

Full cheek bits can be used “loose”, but they show their full potential in combination with special keepers. They attach the upper arms of the cheeks to the cheekpieces of the bridle. What does this give?

It keeps the bit at the ideal angle in the mouth.
It means that when the rein acts, the bit gains a very slight leverage effect (pressure on the poll).
It prevents the cheek from accidentally catching on the noseband or other parts of the bridle.
