Horse riding is a beautiful sport, but one that carries risk. While the helmet has already become standard, the question of stirrups still sparks debate. Is a classic, rigid metal stirrup enough? Or is it worth investing in a flexible (jointed) model?

This is not just a matter of fashion. It is a solution that works in two ways: it protects you from having your leg trapped during a fall and saves your knees from pain after training.

1. Every rider’s nightmare: getting trapped

In a classic, rigid stirrup, at the moment of a fall the foot can get stuck between the arch and the tread. This often happens when we fall sideways or forwards, and the rigid construction gives the foot no room to escape.

How do flexible stirrups work? These stirrups (visible in the photo with black covers on the sides) have special joints inside the arms.

  • During a fall: When your body loses balance and pulls the leg at an unnatural angle, the stirrup does not resist. The arms bend forwards or backwards, following the movement of the foot.
  • Effect: The shape of the stirrup changes, freeing the foot. There is no rigid point for the boot to catch on. The leg slips out freely, and you land safely away from the horse’s hooves.

2. Knee and ankle pain? That is now the past

This is a unique feature that ordinary opening stirrups do not have. Flexible models work with you in every stride of the canter and over every jump.

  • Shock absorption: The joints work like a car’s suspension. They take over part of the shocks that would normally go straight into your ankle and knee joints.
  • For whom? If after riding you feel “twinges” in your ankles, pain in your knees or have old injuries – these stirrups will bring you immediate relief.

3. Stability and “heel down”

Many riders fear that a “jointed” stirrup will be unstable. It is exactly the opposite! The flexibility of the stirrup allows a deeper, more natural loading of the heel. The stirrup yields slightly to the body’s weight, helping maintain a correct, supple leg position without forcefully pushing the heel down.

4. Myth: “They are less durable”

Looking at the rubber covers, some people think the construction is weak. That is a mistake. Inside, under the rubber, there is a solid stainless steel core. The rubber only serves to protect the mechanism from sand and moisture. This is equipment that will withstand years of intensive training.

Summary

Replacing rigid stirrups with flexible ones is an investment in safety and health. If you are looking for equipment that in a critical situation will “release” your leg, and on a daily basis provide comfort for your joints – the flexible model is the best choice.
