In classical riding, choosing the girth length seems simple. In the western style the matter is a little more complicated due to the saddle’s construction and the latigo tightening system. A girth that is too short means not only less saddle stability, but above all painful chafing in the most sensitive spot – right behind the horse’s elbow.
Why does length matter?
In a western saddle the girth buckles (cinch) are much higher than in an English saddle. If the girth is too short:
- The buckles will be too close to the horse’s elbows, which with every step will cause pinching of the skin and sores.
- The latigo knot or buckle will press directly on the shoulder muscles, restricting the horse’s movement.
A simple fitting rule
An ideally fitted western girth should end about 10-15 cm below the edge of the saddle pad (or the saddle skirts).
- For small horses and ponies: We usually choose sizes 24-26 inches.
- For medium-build horses (e.g. Quarter Horse): The most popular sizes are 28-32 inches.
- For large horses: Sizes 34-36 inches.
What to pay attention to when measuring?
Remember that neoprene girths (like those available at Balotade) are slightly elastic. Measure the horse from one saddle ring to the other, subtracting about 30-40 cm for the tightening system. A correctly fastened girth should be roughly halfway up between the sternum and the saddle rings.
Comfort lies in the details
If your horse has very sensitive skin, choose a western girth with synthetic fur. It provides an additional layer of cushioning and prevents the neoprene from “rubbing sore” during long rides on hot days.
