Every trainer repeats: “I want to see foam on the mouth!”. And they are right. White foam (not stress-related drooling) is a sign that the horse is relaxed, willingly accepts contact and “chews” the bit.

But what to do when your horse’s mouth stays dry, the teeth are clenched and riding resembles wrestling with a stiff board? The solution may be to change the equipment to something that… invites the horse to play.

We are talking about bits with rollers or movable elements (toys) on the mouthpiece. Check why these inconspicuous “gadgets” can transform the quality of your training.

1. How does it work? The “fidget spinner” mechanism

Horses are animals curious about the world. When you put a smooth, motionless bit in their mouth, after a while they may “forget” about it and simply clench their jaws on it.

Bits with rollers have rotating elements on the mouthpiece (often copper bars or beads). They act on the horse in a stimulating way:

  • Playing with the tongue: Feeling the movable element, the horse instinctively starts to turn it with its tongue.
  • Activation of the salivary glands: The movement of the tongue and jaw is a natural signal for the body: “we are eating/chewing”. This immediately triggers the production of saliva.

2. Why is chewing the key to relaxation?

It is not only about a wet mouth. In horse riding everything is connected.

  1. The jaw: When the horse plays with the rollers, it has to relax the masseter muscles (the jaw). You cannot clench your teeth and play with a toy at the same time.
  2. The poll: The jaw muscles are connected to the temporomandibular joint and the poll. A loose jaw = a loose poll.
  3. The back: When it releases the tension in the poll, the impulse can flow freely through the neck all the way to the back.

That is why changing the bit to one with rollers often makes the horse suddenly start to “carry” itself better and come onto the bit more willingly.

3. Copper and Sweet Iron – taste matters

In Balotade bits with rollers we often combine mechanics with taste. The rollers themselves are usually made of copper or sweet iron.

  • These metals have a pleasant, slightly sweet aftertaste for horses.
  • The combination of movement (the roller) and taste (copper) is a double incentive to accept the bit. The horse does not treat the bit as a foreign body to be fought, but as something interesting.

4. For whom will a bit with rollers be ideal?

We particularly recommend this type of bit in three cases:

  1. “Dead in the mouth” horses: Those that are stiff, do not chew and are difficult to set into flexion at the poll.
  2. Horses that hang on the rein: Movable rollers mean the bit is not a stable point of support. The horse cannot “hang” on it and pull, which forces it to seek balance on the hindquarters.
  3. Young horses: The toy helps them understand the action of the bit and distracts them from the stress related to a new situation.

Summary

If your horse has trouble relaxing, before you start using complicated tricks, try to encourage it into a dialogue. A bit with rollers or a toy is often the simplest way to achieve the soft, foamy contact that every rider dreams of.
