When choosing a bit, we usually focus on its width and the type of joint. However, there is one more parameter that drastically changes the way the horse carries the bit: its weight.
In the equestrian world we traditionally divided bits into hollow (light) and solid (heavy). Today a third competitor enters this game – titanium, which combines the advantages of both of these solutions.
1. The hollow mouth bit – the lightness of a tube
Hollow bits are made of a stainless steel tube. They are hollow inside, which makes them the lightest choice among steel models.
- Advantages: Ideal for horses that do not tolerate a lot of weight on the tongue and react with tension to a “lump of metal” in the mouth.
- Larger diameter: They are usually thicker (approx. 18-20 mm), which distributes the pressure over a larger area.
- Risk: Steel tubes are less durable – under very strong pressure or biting they can theoretically deform.
2. The solid mouth bit – the stability of solidity
Made of a solid bar of stainless steel. They are clearly heavier, which translates into different communication.
- Advantages: The weight makes the bit lie in the mouth very calmly. It does not “bounce” with every movement, giving the horse a constant and clear signal.
- Precision: They allow faster transmission of the aids thanks to a smaller diameter (often 14-16 mm).
- For whom? For horses needing stable support and precise signals (e.g. in jumping or dressage).
3. Titanium – the “golden mean” and a revolution in weight
Balotade titanium bits change the rules of the game. Titanium is almost half lighter than steel, and at the same time considerably more durable.
- Solid, yet light: A titanium bit, even though it is solid inside, weighs a similar amount to a hollow steel bit.
- Why is it a hit? You get the stability and durability of a “solid” bit, but without burdening the horse’s mouth with unnecessary grams.
- Thermal properties: Titanium instantly takes on the temperature of the mouth, which additionally encourages the horse to accept the bit.
Comparison of materials and weight
| Type of bit | Material | Weight | Stability |
| Hollow | Stainless steel | Very low | Low (can “float”) |
| Solid | Stainless steel | High | Very high |
| Titanium (Solid) | Pure Titanium | Low | Very high |
🔥 Balotade bestsellers: Titanium and Steel
If your horse is sensitive but needs precision – a titanium bit is the best investment. It combines the delicacy of weight with professional stability.
The biggest myth: “A light bit is always gentler”
This is a mistake! A too-light steel bit (hollow) combined with an unstable rider’s hand can be irritating for the horse – it constantly changes its position in the mouth. Many horses only calm down when they feel the definite weight of a solid bit or the steadiness that titanium gives.
Summary
- Choose hollow steel if you are looking for a budget solution for a very sensitive horse.
- Choose solid steel if the horse needs clear support and stabilisation.
- Choose titanium if you want to combine lightness with the highest durability and thermal comfort.
