Horses are wonderful animals that have been closely connected with humans for many years. They serve us as a means of transport, accompany us on expeditions and in wars, and are also used in recreation and equestrian sports.
Here are ten things you probably do not know about horses:
- Horses can swim. Although they are not natural swimmers, they can swim in water, especially when they have to escape danger or when they are specially trained for it.
- Horses can recognise people by their voice. They are able to remember the voices of their owners and recognise them among other people.
- Horses can recognise human emotions. They are able to sense when a person is anxious or upset and react accordingly, for example by calming down or nuzzling the person.
- Horses are considered one of the oldest domestic animals. People have been working with the horse for over 5,000 years.
- Horses can move only one ear at a time. While listening or carrying out commands, one ear is directed towards the person while the other ear is directed towards the surroundings, so horses are able to listen and react to stimuli from the environment.
- Horses have a very strong sense of smell. Their noses are about 100 times more sensitive than human ones and can detect scents even several kilometres away.
- Horses have very strong muscles and can reach speeds of up to 65 km/h. Thanks to their strength and agility they are able to overcome various kinds of obstacles, such as barriers, ditches or bridges.
- Horses can make various sounds depending on the situation. They can call to each other, neigh, snort or squeal, depending on what they feel and want to convey.
- Horses have very long eyelashes that protect their eyes from dust and other contaminants. The eyelashes also help them detect dangers and react to them.
- Horses are very intelligent and can learn new things. They are able to remember commands and perform them in various situations, which makes them excellent companions for humans.
