Comfort, fit and natural action – a bit designed with the anatomy of the horse’s mouth in mind.
The anatomical model from the Balotade® Blue Steel series is a full bit that, thanks to its mass, sits stably in the horse’s mouth. It adapts perfectly to its build, offering comfort and precise, yet gentle action.
Anatomical shape – fit and control
-
The slightly curved mouthpiece adapts perfectly to the shape of the horse’s palate,
-
When the reins are used more forcefully, the bit changes position slightly , increasing the pressure on the tongue – which helps eliminate behaviours such as tongue-twisting,
-
It works great for horses that do not accept classic, straight mouthpieces.
Blue Steel – Natural acceptance and salivation
A bit made of hand-polished blue steel with a sweet aftertaste , which:
-
Stimulates natural salivation – under the influence of moisture and heat, a delicate, sweet rust coating is created,
-
Over time it changes colour from blue to grey to brown – it is a safe, natural process,
-
This does not affect the durability or functionality of the bit , but actually improves its acceptance by horses.
Most horses chew this type of bit more willingly , cooperating more calmly with the rider.
Note on measurement
Anatomical bits are measured in an arc , according to their natural position in the horse’s mouth. Thanks to this, the anatomical size corresponds to a classic bit . If you measure this bit “flat”, the result may be on average 1 cm longer than the given value.

I fell in love with the anatomical bridles and blue steel bits at first sight.
I wholeheartedly recommend this store.
I'm posting a photo of my horse wearing the anatomical bridle from Balotade 🤩
Blue steel bits rust because react in contact with moisture, heat and air. The oxidation process occurs, and as a result, a layer of rust appears on the surface of the bit, which has a sweet aftertaste.
Color change and rust tarnish is a natural phenomenon that is one of the characteristics of this material. This makes the bit more attractive to the horse, as the soft, sweet taste encourages the horse to chew and take the bit better. Don't worry about this - it's an intended effect that promotes the horse's comfort while riding.
Blue Steel bits are made of a material that naturally stimulates saliva secretion in the horse. During use, when exposed to moisture, heat and contact with air, a slight rust coating with a sweet taste forms on the surface of the frenulum. This sweet aftertaste encourages the horse to chew, which in turn increases saliva and makes the horse better accept the bit. As a result, Blue Steel bits promote natural processes that improve comfort and communication between rider and horse while riding.
Yes, Blue Steel bits can be returned, but only on the condition that they have not been used. This means that the bit must not be inserted into the horse's mouth even once. Due to the nature of the material from which they are made, already after the first use, traces such as a slight tarnish of rust appear on the surface of the bit, which makes it not look like new. Therefore, it can only be returned intact.
Our blue bits are made from a type of steel that we call "sweet iron." We choose this material because it rusts easily, which creates a sweet taste that is attractive to horses. Rust comes from the oxidation process that occurs when the bit comes into contact with moisture and air.
Coloring process: The blue color of our bits is obtained by heating sweet iron. As a result of this process, a blue oxide layer is formed on the surface of the bit. As it is used, the color changes from blue to gray and then to brown due to further oxidation. This color change is natural and does not affect the performance of the bit.
Polishing: After forming the bit, we thoroughly polish it to ensure a smooth finish. Polishing prevents pinching or irritation in the horse's mouth and improves the aesthetics of the bit.
No, rusting is one of the main advantages and characteristics of Blue Steel bits. These types of bits start to rust from the first use, as it is the rusting process that creates a sweet aftertaste that encourages horses to chew and improves their comfort. Due to the material's high sensitivity to moisture, micro traces of rust can also appear on rods that have not yet been used. This is not a product defect and therefore such cases are not subject to complaint.
Yes, Blue Steel bits are completely safe for the horse. The material from which they are made has been properly tested to ensure comfort and safety in use. The natural rusting process that occurs on the surface of the bits does not pose a health risk to the horse. On the contrary, it is an intended effect that promotes saliva secretion and makes the horse more willing to accept the bit. You can use Blue Steel bits without worrying about their effect on your horse's health.
Horses readily accept Blue Steel bits because the material of the bridle stimulates natural processes in the horse's mouth. The sweet iron from which they are made naturally enhances saliva secretion. Under the influence of moisture, heat and contact with air, a delicate rust coating with a sweet taste forms on the surface of the bit, which encourages the horse to chew and causes saliva secretion to become more intense. As a result, the horse accepts the bit better, and all communication between rider and horse becomes easier and more comfortable.
In order to slow down the rusting process and keep the frenulum in the best possible condition, it is a good idea to take care of it properly. Wipe the bit dry after each use and store it in a dry, heated area where it will not be exposed to moisture. If the bit is left in a humid environment, the rusting process will accelerate, which can result in the entire surface quickly becoming covered with rust. Regular care of the bit will ensure that it lasts longer and retains its properties, such as a pleasant taste and correct operation.
