How to Use It Safely?

In the equestrian world the draw rein is a taboo subject. Criticised by many instructors as a “razor” and a tool for forcibly pulling the horse’s head down. Valued by professional competitors as a precise aid in correcting difficult horses. The truth, as usual, lies in the middle.

The draw rein itself is not “evil” – only its use can be. If you are considering including it in your training, you have to understand the physics behind it so that your riding is safe and effective.

1. How does it work? The physics of the “pulley”

The draw rein runs from the girth, through the bit rings, up to the rider’s hand. From the point of view of physics this creates a system called a block and tackle. This is the key to understanding the power of this tool.

What does this mean in practice?

Doubling the force: This system doubles the force of your hand. If you pull the reins with a force of 1 kg, the horse will feel it in its mouth as a pressure of around 2 kg.

The risk: This is precisely why the draw rein, in the hands of an inexperienced, tense or aggressive rider, becomes dangerous. It is easy to cross the horse’s pain threshold, which leads to stiffening of the neck and “hiding” behind the bit.

2. When (and what for) to use it?

The most important rule: The draw rein is not for teaching collection. True collection results from engaging the hindquarters and lifting the back, not from pulling the head down. The “flexion at the poll” obtained by the force of a draw rein is false and harmful.

It is a corrective tool that helps in specific situations:

Ewe neck: When the horse notoriously stiffens the lower part of the neck and throws its head up, making it impossible to work through the back. The draw rein shows it the way “down”, helping to relax these muscle groups.

Safety: With horses that bolt or rear, the draw rein acts like a safety brake, preventing a dangerous, abrupt throwing up of the head.

Loosening up: It helps encourage the horse to go low with its nose (forward & down) at the start of the ride, before we begin the proper work.

3. The golden rule: 2+2 (Two pairs of reins)

The biggest mistake is riding with a taut draw rein throughout the whole training. The correct technique requires holding two pairs of reins in your hands and operating them independently:

The snaffle rein (main): This is the one on which you maintain constant contact. It is your “steering wheel” and “brake”.

The draw rein (auxiliary): Should be loose for 90% of the time.

The reward mechanism: You use the draw rein only at the moment of the horse’s resistance (e.g. an abrupt throwing up of the head). As soon as the horse gives in and lowers its neck – you release it immediately, rewarding it with a return to comfort. The lack of an immediate release is the most common training mistake.

4. What NOT to do with a draw rein?

To keep yourself and the horse safe, remember a few iron rules:

Never jump on a draw rein: In the flight phase the horse must have full freedom of the neck to catch its balance (bascule). A taut draw rein restricts it and can lead to a dangerous fall.

Do not use it in the open (if you do not have to): On uneven ground the horse needs its neck to catch its balance when stumbling. A blocked head increases the risk of a tumble.

Do not fasten it “rigidly”: The draw rein must always end in the rider’s hand, it can never be tied permanently to the saddle (like a fixed running rein).

Summary

The draw rein is a powerful tool for riders who already have a stable, independent hand. Used wisely, as a momentary hint, it can help the horse understand that lowering the head brings relief. Used with force – it will only bring pain, stress and a false outline that will ruin years of training.

📦 Professional Balotade auxiliary reins

In the Balotade range you will find draw reins equipped with solid snap hooks that allow you to quickly unclip the rein if needed, even from the saddle. Safety is the priority.

👉 [SEE OUR DRAW REIN]

The draw rein is not evil – only its use can be.
