We often hear that a horse is “hard in the mouth”, “insensitive” or “spiteful” because it tosses its head during training. But before you start looking for fault in the animal’s character or your own skills, take a look at the equipment.

The anatomy of a horse’s mouth is extremely complex – it is a small space filled with a sensitive tongue, palate and toothless bars of the jaw. Traditional, straight bits often do not take this structure into account, causing pain. Anatomical bits were created to solve this problem.

Here are the 3 most common signals your horse sends you, asking to change the bit to an anatomical model.

1. Unstable contact and head-tossing

If your horse, the moment you take up the rein, starts waving its head up and down, or abruptly snatches the reins, this may be a symptom of the so-called nutcracker effect.

An ordinary, single-jointed bit (which is not profiled) folds into a sharp point when the reins are pulled. This point digs straight into the horse’s delicate palate. The pain is severe enough that the horse tries to escape it by throwing up its head.
